A round table discussion on the subject: “Environment of Life and Culture”
Brigitta Papastavrou, President of Agrotouristiki SA., and Stavros Arnaoutakis, member of the European Parliament, will participate in the discussion. The event will take place thanks to the collaboration of AGROTOURISTIKI S.A. and ARIADNE S.A., Naxos Development Company.

Kaloritsa Footpath at Damarionas, Naxos.

As part of the “Voluntarism and Environmental Protection” activities of the Ministry for the Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works (YPEHODE) the cultural organization AEON in association with Conservation Volunteers Greece (CVG) organised the extension of α footpath from the Bazeos Tower to Kaloritsa (a 19th century cave monastery) in the Damarionas region of Naxos. On August 16, 2003, volunteers from Germany, Belgium, Italy, Turkey, Japan and various regions of Greece began arriving at the tower. They formed a twelve-member group, which under the guidance of specialised architects, worked from August 18 to September 12, 2003 to extend the footpath. The volunteers removed vegetation, levelled the soil, constructed steps out of natural material and delimited the path with stones and timber. Upon reaching Kaloritsa, they cleared the vegetation from the entrance and cleaned out the cave. After the departure of the first volunteer group, experienced stone craftsmen took over, constructing stone steps and parapets along the length of the footpath, while they planted oleanders at the end of the route.

We believe that, thanks to the Ministry’s support and the volunteers’ zeal, we accomplished an intervention, which highlighted the natural landscape as well as the cultural heritage of the island, and constitutes the first step in the construction of a broader network of walking routes. We hope all the important monuments of the Baouzi region will be linked in this fashion. This region, as we have proposed to all relevant authorities, should be characterised as a region of particular cultural value and natural beauty.
